An introduction to the Bibliographical Services Section
We provide acquisitions, cataloguing and inter-library loan services to all the City libraries and are responsible for creating and maintaining the library catalogue. If you have any queries about our services or what like to find out about our behind the scenes tours, please get in touch.
BSS: Behind the scenes
A behind-the-scenes look at how we obtain and catalogue books for the City of London's public libraries
BSS: Take the tour
Interested in seeing how we work at Bib Services? Then ask us about our next behind the scenes tour. You will walk through the various stages of ordering, accessioning, cataloguing and preparation for the shelf, with plenty of opportunities to ask "how" and "why". Each tour is likely to last about an hour. The event is free and advance booking is advisable.

Inter Library Loans
As well as our other activities, we in BSS are responsible for managing the City's Inter Library Loans, both borrowing and lending.
If you are a member of our libraries we can try to obtain any book held in a British library (including the lending division of the British Library) for you to borrow, using the UnityUK system to locate the item and apply for it online. To request a loan, please ask at any of our lending libraries (there is a small charge for this service).
If you are not a member of our libraries, but are a member of another library, you may be able to apply to borrow items that you have found on our catalogue via their Inter Library Loans service. Please note that we cannot lend items that are for reference only (which includes the stock of the Guildhall Library and the City Business Library), or audiovisual items such as CDs and DVDs, but will lend the majority of the other stock in our lending libraries.
